Motor vehicle accidents are expensive. Whether it’s a minor accident or a total wreck, repairing or replacing a vehicle costs a lot of money. Then there are injuries. Half of everyone involved in a motor vehicle accident receives an injury from it. Treating these injuries adds even more to your bills.
The unfortunate truth is, motor vehicle accidents are common, so there’s a decent chance that you or someone you know will have to deal with these issues at some point. Fortunately, in Florida, drivers are covered by the No-Fault Law.
No-Fault Law means personal injury protection (PIP)
The Florida No-Fault Law is a state law that requires drivers to have PIP as part of their auto insurance coverage. If you’re the victim of an automobile accident, PIP will cover your insurance bills up to the limit of your insurance. This includes medical bills, lost wages for work missed while recovering and vehicle replacement costs.
If you have more questions about how PIP works with your insurance plan, please talk to your auto insurance provider.
Always get a medical examination
You should always get a medical examination after an automobile accident. Even if you have no pain, you may have hidden developing symptoms of an injury that will start to hurt after a day or two.
PIP should cover the costs of your medical examination, but you must schedule an appointment within 14 days of the accident to qualify. If you wait any longer, your insurance company will have a hard time connecting your injuries to the accident.
Truthfully, 14 days is longer than you should wait anyway. If you’ve been in an accident, you should schedule an appointment as soon as possible to make sure you don’t have a hidden injury. The day of or the day after an accident is an ideal time frame to aim for.
