Delray Beach: Where beach town meets Japan
Delray Beach is one of many amazing destinations scattered along the Atlantic coast of southeast Florida, and as such, it offers many opportunities to have your fill of beach fun. However, there are several other attractions that make this town worthy of a visit.
For instance, Delray Beach offers a large, pedestrian-friendly area in it’s town center called Atlantic Avenue. The brick-paved sidewalks in this area are bordered by shady palm and oak trees, and this makes the Avenue a great place to walk around even on the hottest summer day. You can also take advantage of the shopping and dining opportunities offered by the many fashion boutiques, art galleries and restaurants in this area.
However, one of the most unexpected attractions you’ll find in Delray Beach has got to be the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. This unique cultural attraction originally opened in 1977 and pays tribute to a small Japanese agricultural settlement that existed in the Delray Beach area from 1904 until the early 1920s.
The museum portion of this attraction features two buildings, and these buildings are home to rotating exhibits of Japanese artifacts and art, as well as monthly traditional tea ceremonies. The 16 acres immediately surrounding the two buildings are even more fascinating. They contain an extensive and gorgeous array of Japanese gardens complete with the customary strolling paths, resting areas and koi-filled lakes. The gardens also contain the museum’s world-class collection of bonsai trees.
